NVAHOF Director TD Barnes Releases Book “Aviation Legends of the Battle Born State”

The Nevada Aerospace Hall of Fame Executive Director, TD Barnes has a 186-page book depicting the aviation and aerospace legends and pioneers who made history by their deeds and accomplishments in the Battle Born state of Nevada. The proceeds from all book sales will go to the non-profit 501(C)3 NVAHOF corporation to support its mission of recognizing the men, women, and organizations who pioneered aerospace and aviation in the Battle Born State of Nevada. Becoming the West Coast line of Defense during World War II, Nevada has produced the most astronauts of any state, the NERVA nuclear rocket engine, and the classified science and technology developed in obscurity at venues such as Area 51 & TTR.
Nevada, the Battle Born state was selected as the nation’s west coast line of defense during World War II. Ever since, Nevada has hosted the Army Air Corps, the Atomic Energy Commission, the Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, US Army, and the Navy for the development of the nation’s most highly classified activities and achievements that played a large part in winning the Cold War and all other wars in between. The state of Nevada has been a Mecca for independent people who wanted to do new and different things. Among the state’s unique accomplishments were the pioneering of space travel during which Nevada produced more astronauts than any other state. Nevada hosted the development of nuclear power for space exploration and as a deterrent to aggression by our enemies. The state’s development and testing of the accouterments of space, war, and defense have contributed to our nation’s successes. With the initial U-2 plane flight tests at Groom Lake, almost every flight established a new world altitude record for manned flight. The flights of the CIA’s A-12 spy plane at Groom Lake set world altitude and speed records that still stand today.

Nevada has continued to exhibit its unique heritage through many aerospace pioneers and programs that have been either based here or in the interest of national security-based elsewhere but commuted to conduct their activities within the state of Nevada. Though these individuals and programs made major contributions to the state of Nevada, the United States, and the free world, little is known of some because many of these aerospace pioneers and icons made sacrifices and contributions in ultra secrecy at locations that even today are not well-known. Contributing to their obscurity, they often used pseudo names in the interest of national security, thus ensuring that they remained nonexistent until declassification of the associated programs. In many instances, national security concerns required these aerospace pioneers to reside in another state and commute to work at secret venues in Nevada. This occurred with the CIA when it chose Nevada for the Agency’s Area 51 to develop the U-2 spy plane.

Formed 1 December 2008, the Nevada Aerospace Hall of Fame (NVAHOF) is a non-profit, educational institution dedicated to preserving the legacy of these men and women who pioneered and advanced our nation’s aerospace within and above the State of Nevada.

NVAHOF serves as an educational tool to assist both researchers and the general public in better understanding the very significant aerospace history of Nevada as well as a means of recognizing those hidden beneath the shroud of secrecy who contributed so much to their country.

T.D.:
Just finished your book, what a pleasure. This book has got to be
the best documentation about the Ranch that has ever been written.
Only a very few would have the experience and the overall knowledge
to even attempt such a task. Congratulations on completing this task,
it should be mandatory reading for all Roadrunners!

His family and friends never knew he worked on special projects for the CIA. Fifty years later, the CIA admits the existence of the top-secret facility known as Area 51. Barnes, an Area 51 and Cold War veteran tells what brought him from a desolate childhood on a remote ranch in the West Texas Panhandle, and through an Army career in radar and missiles to Area 51 to serve the CIA as an electronic specialist engaged in stealth and clandestine exploitation of enemy aircraft.
Thornton D. “TD” Barnes, author and entrepreneur, grew up on a ranch at Dalhart, Texas, graduated from MT. View High School, Oklahoma, followed by a ten-year military career that started as an Army Intelligence in Korea to Nike and Hawk missile schools, and ended with his attending Artillery OCS where an injury ended his military career.
Barnes served during the arms, nuclear, and space races that made it America’s battlefield of World War II, the cold war and all the wars since. Soaring With The Eagles by TD Barnes provides a personal account of the selection process for admission into Area 51. The book follows his odyssey through his childhood on a ranch in New Mexico, his military career, involvement with the NSA, CIA, and NASA that brought him to Area 51. The book follows the career of a veteran of the NASA High Range where he and others pioneered the NASA X-15, XB-70, and Lifting Bodies to place Americans in space. The CIA selected Barnes for a special projects team during CIA A-12 Project OXCART at Area 51 where he remained as Special Projects cadre for the Soviet MiG exploitation programs, the early days of stealth. The book includes the personal sacrifices of the family to support Barnes’ career while not knowing what he did or where. They followed him to places where the Army issued his wife Doris and their child, dog tags and required mandatory practice evacuation runs in preparation for war. Barnes’ name is engraved on a national memorial monument on Mt. Charleston, Nevada with a distant view of Area 51. The monument is in recognition of the Silent Heroes of the Cold War who worked at Area 51.
This book covers much of the recently declassified and rich military and technological deeds that are the legacy of Nevada and aviation and aerospace. The author is president of Roadrunners Internationale, an association of the CIA, Air Force, and contractor personnel who worked at Area 51. He co-founded the Nevada Aerospace Hall of Fame and served as its first Executive Director for almost five years. Several books and documentaries on the History Channel, Discovery Channel, and two on National Geographic have featured Barnes’ career at Area 51.
TD and Doris formed a family oil and gas exploration company drilling and producing oil and gas, mining uranium and gold. He is currently CEO of Startel, Inc. landowner and actively mining landscape rock and gold in Nevada.
Barnes is currently the president of Roadrunners Internationale, an association of Area 51 veterans, and formerly the first executive director of the Nevada Aerospace Hall of Fame
The History Channel, the Discovery Channel, the Travel Channel, and others feature him in two National Geographic Channel documentaries “Area 51 Declassified” and “CIA – Secrets of Area 51,” and numerous documentaries. The Annie Jacobsen book, Area 51 Declassified also features his career.

Area 51 veteran and author TD Barnes donating his book MiGs Over Nevada to Gathering of the Eagles event

migs-thumb

Available in paperback and ebook

MiGs Over Nevada is an insider’s declassified participation in a small group of CIA personnel and contract specialists providing their technological tradecraft to support Area 51 customers such as the US Air Force, the US Navy, intelligence and corporate entities. What happened in this book inspired the founding of the Navy’s TOP GUN Fighter Weapons School, the USAF Weapons School, and the USAF’s RED FLAG training exercises that continue today.

CIA declassification in October 2013 released information making possible the release of MiGs Over Nevada by Area 51 veteran TD Barnes. MiGs Over Nevada describes Area 51 operations where a small group of CIA personnel and contract specialists served and supported customers such as the US Air Force, the US Navy, and numerous corporate entities seeking technological tradecraft existing only at Area 51. The book tells how living under a cloak of secrecy affected the family of one whose career path made him a member of this secret cadre for test flying spy planes, and exploiting enemy technology.
MiGs Over Nevada does more than document the exploitation of the MiG-17F Fresco C, MiG-21F Fishbed, and the MiG-23 Flogger. It carries the reader through the evolution of Area 51 that made it the venue for the CIA’s U-2 Project AQUATONE, A-12 Project OXCART, for exploiting Soviet MiG aircraft, and the nations black projects that followed and continue today.
It tells how these projects inspired decades of exploitation projects that morphed into MiG operations known as the Red Eagles and the Red Hats.
What happened in this book inspired the founding of the Navy’s TOP GUN Fighter Weapons School, the USAF Weapons School, and the USAF’s RED FLAG training exercises that continue today.

Photos of Roadrunners Internationale reunion by Angella Raisian

Roadrunners Internationale 2015 Reunion – October 5-8 (Las Vegas)
Updated 19 hours ago
Our nations secret heroes, Area 51 veterans who worked on Aquatone (U-2) and Oxcart (A-12) projects in the 50’s and 60’s at Area 51 and later at EAFB and Beale, are no longer so secret. Pilots and Crew, CIA, Lockheed, Honeywell, P&W, and Air Force, veterans gathered for possibly RI’s last reunion. Lockheed and CIA, as usual, sponsored parts of the event.

3 volunteers from the Air Force Flight Test Museum attended the reunion – Bill “Flaps” Flanagan, Curt Mason, and Angella Raisian. Representatives from many other aviation museums were present also.

The photos in a large conference room are at the Gold Coast Hotel’s Command Post, which was available to the Roadunners for the entire week, to chat and mingle.

The photos with aliens are from a morning trip that the Roadrunners took to Rachel, NV, bordering Area 51, on Tuesday October 6th.

The photos of the granite memorial were taken near Mt. Charleston, where a C-54 crashed with 14 CIA, Lockheed, and USAF members on-board, in 1955. Lockheed’s Bob Murphy, who is lucky enough to have been attending the RI reunions for many decades now overslept after a night of late partying and missed that tragic flight. He went on to work on, and manage, U-2, A-12, and SR-71 production at Skunk Works.

Wednesday afternoon was spent at the National Atomic Testing Museum, where TD Barnes (RI president & CIA employee who worked on numerous Area 51 projects}, Frank Murray (A-12 pilot who discovered USS Pueblo), and Paul Suhler were signing their books about Area 51 and SR-71. See links for book info below.

The banquet on Thursday night was where Lt. Col. Frank Murray, USAF (Ret.) presentis his RI historical archives and collection to the Langley museum that houses A-12 article 128. The emcee, Roger Andersen, did a great job introducing everyone present at the banquet.

The last set of photos is from the Nellis AFB “Petting Zoo”, where enemy weapons are on display for familiarization by our troops.

Angella 🙂
