For half a century, his family and friends never knew he worked on special projects at Area 51 for the CIA. Barnes, an Area 51 and Cold War veteran tells what brought him from a desolate childhood on a remote ranch in the West Texas Panhandle, and through an Army career to Area 51 to serve the CIA's Directorate of Science and Technology.
Soaring with the Eagles is a story about how the Central Intelligence Agency selected him during the Cold War while recruiting high achievers into its new Directorate of Science and Technology on station at Area 51. Only since the CIA recently declassified how it secretly formed Area 51 can renown Area 51 veteran, TD Barnes publish his autobiography, Soaring with the Eagles. Barnes provides an exciting account of his career of secrecy, secrets that his family endured and supported for half a century while not knowing where he worked, what he did, or for whom. Barnes shares the family sacrifices and achievements along the way. TEOTWAWK. "The end of the world as we know it" This ring true when a new US missile defense measure causes a nuclear-tipped Chinese rocket test to change course and target Beijing. In the heat of the moment, a Chinese missile officer triggers the release of an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) device in Earth orbit as part of the nation's deterrent to a pre-emptive attack. The incident triggers the release of nuclear weapons that brings the dreaded nuclear winter that circles the globe for four years. Ninety percent of the Earth's population will perish in the aftermath.
The EMP series realistically depicts the life of a group of survivors living underground in the wake of an EMP and nuclear attack that destroys electronic devices and the electric power grids over much of the world. The story follows the life of a group of survivors sheltered inside the unused Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository at Jackass Flats, Nevada. At the same time, book one of the EMP series depicts what to expect in such a dreadful event that could happen at the hands of a rogue nation. North Korea, Iran, or even terrorists can deliver such a device on board a ship or even a backpack from across the border of a targeted nation. It could be a matter of when rather than a matter of if. In any case, the desperate efforts to survive following such an attack will be brutal above all imagination.

The world has for the past two years suffered from a nuclear winter of global magnitude following an EMP attack that lay waste the electric power grids and electronics of much of the world. Ninety percent of the world's population has perished, those surviving being from the underdeveloped countries not targeted by a nuclear exchange that followed. At the unused Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository in Nevada, a group of survivors briefly venture out of their underground refuge only to face a battle with hostile foreign survivors seeking to take their refuge. An attack from within causes much death and ignites military action. They find themselves under surveillance by Islamic activists who survived in Central America and are moving into Nevada to take control of the Hoover Dam, which gives the Brotherhood control of the Colorado River and the electricity it generates for the western United States. Both the activists and the survivors in the mountain realize the jet stream is returning the fallout of the nuclear winter back to the region. Both seek to replenish food and supplies needed to carry them through another siege by the nuclear fallout. The survivors in the mountain repel attacks on the mountain and enter the next phase of nuclear winter prepared to battle the Islamic State and drive them from the region.

Two years ago, at the unused Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository in Nevada, a group of survivors had briefly ventured out of their underground refuge only to face a battle with hostile foreign survivors seeking to take their refuge. The jet stream returned the fallout of the nuclear winter back to the region, but not before both replenish the food and supplies needed to carry them through another siege by the nuclear fallout. The survivors in the mountain have the past two years prepared to repel attacks on the mountain and to battle the Islamic jihadists arriving from Central America seeking to control Hoover Dam for an Islamic State in Arizona. Now, the nuclear winter that blanketed the globe has reduced to storms influenced by the jet stream. The survivors split, most leaving the mountain to establish a refuge in the Veteran's Hospital in North Las Vegas from future storm events. A small group remains at the mountain to defend it. A battle ensues at the Hoover Dam just ahead of global weather changes that deliver radioactive dust from an El Nino storm that forces the survivors to seek cover. Tragedy strikes with unimaginable consequences.

The Hanson family, Hoot, a laid-back oilman, his feisty wife, Hanna, their twin girls have been through hell and back since their small independent oil company struck oil, a lot of oil. The notoriety brought by the wildcat strike and targeted their hard-earned wealth had forced them to arm a private army in defense that today was an international security service company. The combination of the Hanson's prevailing against all the odds and the global demand for the Hanson Security Services brought power that Hoot enhances by agreeing to take the place of terminally ill US Senator. When the Islamic jihadist crosses the Mexican border to seize American school girls for human trafficking, Senator Hanson leads his private army in a recovery of the girls on Mexican soil. In a meeting with the president of Mexico, they team up to close the border from the Mexican side, stopping terrorists from traveling through Mexico to get to the United States and halting the flow of drugs. Drug wars erupt in the US cities as the market dries up. Hanson Security Services exposes politicians enriching themselves from the sales of narcotics.

They all, President Truman, the Army, Air Force, Navy, and the Marine Corps feared the Central Intelligence Agency, yet the president tasked it with doing something that the Air Force would not do. That was to develop a manned overhead reconnaissance program to spy on Russia. Despite many technological and bureaucratic hurdles, the CIA, in eight months from contract to flying, and under budget, produces the revolutionary U-2 spy plane. A few months later, the CIA is overflying the Communist Soviet Union to disprove the feared bomber and missile gap between the two superpowers. The struggle between the CIA and the US Air Force to control the U-2 Angels and the persistent tension between the CIA and Presidents Truman and Eisenhower extends to the A-12 Archangels intended to replace the U-2. The CIA loses many lives of pilots flying out of the agency's remote site in Nevada known today as Area 51.

archangels

The combination of the shoot down of the U-2 over Russia in 1960, Russia’s moving into Cuba, and the war in Vietnam placed a heavy load on the Central Intelligence Agency to develop a replacement spy plane, unlike anything the world had ever seen before. The CIA reestablishes its station at Area 51 under the CIA’s new Directorate of Science and Technology where it develops America’s first stealth plane, the A-12 Archangel. Designed with slide-rule technology, the CIA produces what is still today the fastest and highest flying manned air-breathing aircraft ever. The A-12 plane spends 18 months on a pylon situated on the dry Groom Lake during RCS, radar cross section evaluations by the CIA's special projects team at Area 51. It flies 2,850 secret flights out of Area 51 during the flight tests known as Project OXCART. From Area 51, CIA Director Helms deploys people and three planes to a CIA outpost in Kadena, Okinawa where the CIA operationally overflies North Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and North Korea during Operation BLACK SHIELD before the Air Force replacing it with the SR-71, the fourth member of the Blackbird family.

The Central Intelligence Agency founded Area 51 to develop the revolutionary high-flying U-2 reconnaissance plane. Area 51 becomes a station for the Central Intelligence Agency's newly formed Directorate of Science and Technology initiated to develop a successor to the U-2 Angel. Under Dr. Bud Wheelon, the Science and Technology Directorate making up the CIA's 5th discipline for intelligence gathering, the CIA recruited specialists to form a special project team to design the A-12 Archangel as America’s first stealth plane. The CIA underwent many trials and tribulations using slide rule technology to successfully build and fly the highest and fastest plane operationally ever. The A-12 reconnaissance program ends when the US Air Force becomes operational with the SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance plane. By this time, the CIA’s Science and Technology Directorate has assembled a special projects team at Area 51 like no other in the world. Knowing that it will soon be out of the aerial reconnaissance business, the CIA had already made its unique facilities at the Area 51 station into a business of continuing with stealth development. It already had a new project needed by customers starting with the US Air Force and the Navy. Thus, the Area 51 station began the exploitation of the Soviet MiG planes that had mastered the aerial war in Vietnam. That was only the start of a highly classified technology laboratory, and business that has expanded to a level one can only imagine today. Recent declassification by the CIA now allows the telling by Barnes, an Area 51 veteran, of the CIA's extraordinary accomplishments at Area 51 for almost a decade after all its planes stopped flying.

Legends

Nevada, the Battle Born state was selected as the nation’s west coast line of defense during World War II. Ever since, Nevada has hosted the Army Air Corps, the Atomic Energy Commission, the Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, US Army, and the Navy for the development of the nation’s most highly classified activities and achievements that played a large part in winning the Cold War and all other wars in between. The state of Nevada has been a Mecca for independent people who wanted to do new and different things. Among the state's unique accomplishments were the pioneering of space travel during which Nevada produced more astronauts than any other state. Nevada hosted the development of nuclear power for space exploration and as a deterrent to aggression by our enemies. The state's development and testing of the accouterments of space, war, and defense have contributed to our nation's successes. With the initial U-2 plane flight tests at Groom Lake, almost every flight established a new world altitude record for manned flight. The flights of the CIA's A-12 spy plane at Groom Lake set world altitude and speed records that still stand today.    Nevada has continued to exhibit its unique heritage through many aerospace pioneers and programs that have been either based here or in the interest of national security-based elsewhere but commuted to conduct their activities within the state of Nevada. Though these individuals and programs made major contributions to the state of Nevada, the United States, and the free world, little is known of some because many of these aerospace pioneers and icons made sacrifices and contributions in ultra secrecy at locations that even today are not well-known. Contributing to their obscurity, they often used pseudo names in the interest of national security, thus ensuring that they remained nonexistent until declassification of the associated programs. In many instances, national security concerns required these aerospace pioneers to reside in another state and commute to work at secret venues in Nevada. This occurred with the CIA when it chose Nevada for the Agency's Area 51 to develop the U-2 spy plane.    Formed 1 December 2008, the Nevada Aerospace Hall of Fame (NVAHOF) is a non-profit, educational institution dedicated to preserving the legacy of these men and women who pioneered and advanced our nation's aerospace within and above the State of Nevada.    NVAHOF serves as an educational tool to assist both researchers and the general public in better understanding the very significant aerospace history of Nevada as well as a means of recognizing those hidden beneath the shroud of secrecy who contributed so much to their country.    Executive Director: TD Barnes

Genesis

The United States and Soviet Union are in a Cold War and have fought a proxy war in Korea. The Soviet Union is expanding Communism behind its closed borders and is competing with the United States in the Nuclear, weapons, and space races. The United States needs to know what the Soviet Union is up to behind the Iron Curtain, but to do so requires a revolutionary surveillance plane capable of overflying the Soviet Union undetected and high enough to escape the missiles of its Cold War enemy. When the US Air Force refuses to develop such a plane, the US president goes to the Central Intelligence Agency who undertakes the development of the U-2 plane. The CIA needs a remote location to secretly develop the U-2 and to train its pilots. The agency selects a remote site in Nevada along the nation’s western line of defense established in World War II. The secret location becomes known as Area 51.
