REVIEW of the National Geographic Channel documentary: The participants in the documentary feel Nat Geo Channel did an excellent job of telling the story in the course of only an hour. The staff was extremely professional.
REVIEW OF ANNIE JACOBSEN’S BOOK: Author Annie Jacobsen worked tirelessly to research the programs and participation of the characters in her book. She masterfully wove in the many facets that merged to become the genesis of the secret operations as they converged into the black world of Area 51. Kudos to Annie for her patience and understanding as she skillfully retrieved former Top Secret stories half a century old from aviation icons worrying about boarding their final flight while trying to retrieve from memory their recently declassified stories of long ago. Fortunately, they managing to not divulge secrets to which the author lacked the need to know. The secrets of Area 51 remain intact.
DISCLAIMER: Most of us who worked at the Ranch give no credit to the stories about UFOs, aliens, and such. We consider and accept such as folklore. While irritated at first about the final chapter, I accept that even if the masses are buying the book for the final chapter, it means that they are also reading the accounts of the veterans who worked there.
In all fairness to Annie Jacobsen and Little Brown, the following is their synopsis of Annie’s book. “AREA 51 by Annie Jacobsen – This is the first book based on interviews with eye witnesses to Area 51 history, which makes it the seminal work on the subject. Filled with formerly classified information that has never been accurately decoded for the public, AREA 51 weaves the mysterious activities of the top-secret base into a gripping narrative, showing that facts are often more fantastic than fiction, especially when the distinction is almost impossible to make.”
While I disclaim affiliation to all reference to the Roswell crash, or human experiments at Area 51, I support this book as it addresses the true legacies of the participants, projects, and the facility at Groom Lake.
Check this National Geographic news release for more information of what the documentary is about.
Customers can pre-order Area 51 on DVD on shopNGvideos.com now and will be able to pre-order on shopNG.com and amazon.com next week. The product won’t be ready to ship for another 2 weeks.

Watched the program. It is hard to realize that we have all aged so much and so well. Would like to have seen more of the people involved. I am currently reading the book and liking it very much.

Billie, the sad part is that we don’t have all our guys represented in the documentary or the book. The aging part is very stressful for me in particular because of remembering everyone when we were in our late 20s or early 30s and now seeing them in their 80s. Thank you for your comments. I am passing them on to Annie Jacobsen whom I’m sure will appreciate them as much as have I. Thank you, CMSGT Holmes for being a member of our band of brothers.

What a STAR you are!!! You certainly did very well on the program. I recognized only three people – you, Slater and Collins. Thought it was a good program; all of you guys did well.

Thank you, Jane. Even though I’m not a pilot, flattery will get you everywhere. ha

Dear T. D.,
I really hesitate to inquire of you, but cannot help myself! I knew I was in the presence of a very special person when you so graciously hosted me a couple of yrs. ago, when you let me video you, and your trophy room. I am, with your sanction, an associate member, as brother to Sam Nave, Sr. Flight Test Engineer a Area 51, who, as told to me by the family kin, Director of Missile Defense at the Pentagon, unofficially flew the A-12 dual cockpit. Thanks so much for this email, that afforded me to watch your presentation! I did not get home in time to tape it, and I found the website says that the video is not downloadable, (at least not yet). You, Mr. Barnes, have added, I guess, a new hat, to add to your awesome resume! TV STAR!! Thanks for sharing that 5%! Is it possible to acquire a DVD of the presentation? I am sure you stay a very busy guy, but this probably has created a near impossible mailbag of emails! So that is why I hesitate, but cannot help myself! But, if time and your busy world cannot respond, no problem, I will see if it might be available later on the channel website.

Mr Barnes,
TREMENDOUS program! LOVED EVERY second of it. Wish
COL Murray could have been a part of it. Perhaps one day they could do a follow up piece detailing some of the missions flown from Kadena…
Only so much can be done in a one hour program. I wish, I wish…. more depth for the MiG Exploitation Program, more on the successful missions and the recon obtained, something on Jack Weeks, and that we could have supported with out displays that YOU were key in presenting.
DAMN FINE START!! Let’s do more!
Blue skies,
Owen
With a great deal of respect and admiration to all that partook of this historic action, I thank you. I will be sure to tune in tomorrow night. I will also pass this on to everyone I know here in Vegas and that in itself is a pretty large audience. God Bless you and yours.

I went to buy the book today. It is sold out at all the Barnes & Noble stores nearby. I ordered a copy which should arrive near the end of the week. I’m looking forward to it. Congratulations on everything. You are now officially my coolest uncle.
My husband,Paul, and I had the thrill of a lifetime attending the Nat Geo premiere of Area 51 Declassified…definitely topped my bucket list! We can’t thank you enough, T.D.,for making this possible…meeting and seeing again the booksigners and meeting Gene Poteat along with Malvina Martin and Erin Griffin was truly a treat. But preserving Area 51′s history and the Oxcart legacy for prosterity purposes was the crowning achievement; Annie Jacobsen and the National Geographic Society should be SO PROUD. See you in October….
