They departed Earth to prepare Mars for the colonists to follow. When they had to abort landing on Mars, they drifted into outer space where they encountered the gravity pull of an unknown planet shielded by an ion shield. They manage to contact Earth and then wait five years for the arrival of a second spaceship bringing colonists to colonize a world different from any they envisioned.
